This industrial design fostered novel algorithms for pose and orientation estimation in harsh environments. Our Client needed to solve the real time estimation of position and lean angle of motorbikes to improve the information available to professional pilots.
The big challenge was to design novel Sensor Fusion techniques based on MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Sensors) measurements and capable of bypassing the lack of magnetometers information, due to the big nonlinear distortion of magnetic field caused by the motorbike chassis.
The system is designed to provide real-time position and attitude (Roll, Pitch and Yaw angles) of motorbikes, and can be even deployed on cars and karts.
Two mounting locations are supported. The common option is to position the device integral with the vehicle chassis. A second possibility, provided by the internal algorithms, is to place the device on moving parts, like the handlebar of the motorbike.
